The terms online and offline (also on-line and off-line) have specific meanings with respect to computer technology and telecommunication. In general, "online" indicates a state of connectivity, while "offline" indicates a disconnected state. In common usage, "online" often refers to the Internet or the World Wide Web.

The concepts have however been extended from their computing and telecommunication meanings into the area of human interaction and conversation, such that even offline can be used in contrast to the common usage of online (e.g., "I bought those Marcus Fenix figurines offline").

Standard definitions

In computer technology and telecommunication, online and offline are defined by Federal Standard 1037C. They are states or conditions of a "device or equipment" or of a "functional unit". To be considered online, one of the following must apply to a device:

  • Under the direct control of another device
  • Under the direct control of the system with which it is associated
  • Available for immediate use on demand by the system without human intervention
  • Connected to a system, and is in operation
  • Functional and ready for service

In contrast, a device that is offline meets none of these criteria (e.g., its main power source is disconnected or turned off, or it is off-power).

Online, can businesses tell the difference between credit and debit?
Q. Because I know that it is possible to use the debit card online, and ultimately, when something says "pay now by credit card", can they really tell the difference between someone using credit, or debit for one time transaction?
Asked by alphafoxtrot015 - Mon Mar 31 19:30:37 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've never used a debit card online so I can't answer with 100% certainty, but I'm pretty sure the merchant will know what form of payment was used. Debit cards require the entry of a PIN number, so if the system can recognize the difference and ask for that PIN, it only makes sense that the merchant could find out that a debit card was used instead of a credit card. There is also the possibility that the bank that is handling the transaction charges the merchant a lower fee for accepting debit cards, and under that circumstance, the merchant would only have to look at their transaction charges to know the difference.

A. Yeah there are a few, like mingles that are free, with no paid membership. It's only one type of membership for everybody which is a free membership. So you get all the features, like message, chat, etc... for free. You can read a full review of the site and its features before you join here Hope it's what you're looking for. Good luck, have fun and be safe.

what is the best online university? Do employers really take you seriously with an online degree?
Q. I have GI Bill money to use, and Im a mom of 2 kis so attending school would be tough, figured online would be the way to go. Any recommendations or places to stay away from? Personal experiences would be great! Thanks alot!

A. To be honest, none of the "online universities" are very good, and employers, if they care about a college degree at all, do not take them very seriously. However, there are many traditional universities these days where you can get a degree online. I would recommend one of those, particularly those which have a strong reputation for their conventional classes, as better by far (and usually cheaper, too!).
