A calendar is a system of organizing days for social, religious, commercial, or administrative purposes. This is done by giving names to periods of time, typically days, weeks, months, and years. The name given to each day is known as a date. Periods in a calendar (such as years and months) are usually, though not necessarily, synchronized with the cycles of some astronomical phenomenon, such as the cycle of the sun or the moon. Many civilizations and societies have devised a calendar, usually derived from other calendars on which they model their systems, suited to their particular needs. A calendar is also a physical device (often paper). This is the most common usage of the word. Other similar types of calendars can include computerized systems, which can be set to remind the user of upcoming events and appointments. As a subset, calendar is also used to denote a list of particular set of planned events (for example, court calendar). The English word calendar is derived from the Latin word kalendae, which was the Latin name of the first day of every month. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Calendars" What is the difference between the Gregorian and Julian calendars? Q. When did they come into use, how were they structured, when did they fall out of use (if applicable) and how many days were lost during the transition between calendars? I can't for the life of me find information that isn't confusing as hell. I'd be delighted if someone could put it into layman's terms for me, refraining from just cutting and pasting information from the internet (I've looked there already). Just curious as I am researching the validity of some New Age texts, and would like this information for reference. Cheers guys! It is a revision of the Julian calendar that preceded it. Until 1582 AD, western nations measured time using the Julian calendar. This calendar was authorized by Julius Caesar in 46 BC. It is based on the assumption that a year is 365.25 days. Every fourth year is declared a leap year when an extra day is added to February. The only real problem with the Julian calendar was its handling of leap years. Inserting one leap year in every four years results in a calendar year averaging 365.25 days, a good but not perfect match to the real calendar year of about 365.242189 days. This causes an "error" of about .75 days per century. When the Gregorian calendar was authorized, a… [cont.] Answered by Researcher - Tue Oct 3 07:05:12 2006 Who decides every year in the calendars when is Carnival or Easter? Q. Every year dates like Carnival or Easter, are in diferent days on the calendars. Who or how is decided? For exemple, We know every year that Christmas is on the 25th of december. But Easter, sometimes is in March, other is in April. How that happens? Asked by Pablo - Mon Mar 24 22:35:50 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is all quoted from the website referenced below: The current Gregorian ecclesiastical rules that determine the date of Easter trace back to 325 CE at the First Council of Nicaea convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine. At that time the Roman world used the Julian Calendar (put in place by Julius Caesar). The ecclesiastical rules are: Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the day of the vernal equinox; this particular ecclesiastical full moon is the 14th day of a tabular lunation (new moon); and the vernal equinox is fixed as March 21. resulting in that Easter can never occur before March 22 or later than April 25. The Gregorian dates for the ecclesiastical full… [cont.] Answered by skydanser - Mon Mar 24 23:09:57 2008 I just bought a .mac account, how do I set up iCal so I can upload calendars? Q. I get an, " No open directory server configured" Configure one or more Open Directory servers using Directory Utility, or use an explicit Account URL. Huh? Plus with the transition to mobileme how will that affect my calendars? Asked by RobH - Wed Jul 9 01:25:05 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Open Directory Server is a computer that provides directory and authentication services for mixed networks of Mac OS X, Windows, and UNIX computers. The message uses that generic term rather than the specific "Dot Mac server" but for your purposes, they are the same. Directory Utility (in Leopard) is a helper application for setting up connection to an Open Directory Server. Since your Open Directory Server is specifically the "Dot Mac" server, you can trim down your work by simply using the .Mac preferences pane of System Preferences. Make sure your account information is correct in .Mac preferences (choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click .Mac). Check your account information in the .Mac pane and click the iDisk button to make… [cont.] Answered by SilverTonguedDevil - Thu Jul 10 19:21:12 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Calendars"
