Adult dog peeing and pooping in house when she has a dog door?
Q. We adopted Macy, a Border Collie/Australian Sheppard mix from a shelter two years ago. She is now 6 years old. She is a pretty high energy dog and plays well with our 4 year old lab mix. We have a large yard, dog door for them, and every weekend we all run 4 miles together. Macy has always been a counter surfer and we assumed it was from then abuse/neglect of her past home, we just try to dog proof the house before we leave. She has also always relieved herself on our concrete patio which folks told us was from being in a shelter. Neither of these habits are desireable but we accept her with her imperfections since all of our training effort have been for naught. (Don t think that she is unruly she has learned to walk/run on a leash, be… [cont.]

A. Have you had the vet check her for something like a urinary tract infection? If not, that would be my first suggestion. If she checks out okay, I would treat her like a new puppy and re-train. Restrict her to a crate at night and when you aren't supervising to prevent the accidents. Don't let her out of your sight, and reward for going outside. If the vet thinks there may be an anxiety component to her actions, a mild anti-anxiety medication may be worth a try as well. Add: You also may ask the vet to check her for joint pain, as that could be making it uncomfortable for her to use the dog door.
