A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services. Social networking has encouraged new ways to communicate and share information. Social networking websites are being used regularly by millions of people. While it could be said that email and websites have most of the essential elements of social network services, the idea of proprietary encapsulated services has gained popular uptake recently. The main types of social networking services are those which contain category divisions (such as former school-year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with Facebook widely used worldwide; MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn being the most widely used in North America; Nexopia (mostly in Canada); Bebo, Hi5, MySpace, dol2day (mostly in Germany), Tagged, XING;, Badoo and Skyrock in parts of Europe; Orkut and Hi5 in South America and Central America; and Friendster, Multiply, Orkut, Wretch, Xiaonei and Cyworld in Asia and the Pacific Islands. There have been some attempts to standardize these services to avoid the need to duplicate entries of friends and interests (see the FOAF standard and the Open Source Initiative), but this has led to some concerns about privacy. GNU Free Documentation License What are some social networking sites similar to LinkedIn? Q. My uncle has to get a new job, and it was recommended that he join some social networking sites such as LinkedIn to gain connections and speak to others in his profession. I was asked to gather a list of these sites for him, but the only thing I can think of is LinkedIn. I know there are ones like Facebook and MySpace, but I mean more professional-geared sites. Any suggestions? Asked by shelstar27 - Thu Nov 20 20:52:06 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. Q. I was wondering if there are any good books on owning and managing a social networking website. I have found it difficult to prepare for the challenges of managing a website. We recently hired a consulting/software development company that has taken care of everything from design and development to analyzing, testing, and hosting. However, I would like to know everything that they know! Is there anything I can study to learn the ins and outs of owning and operating a social networking website? Q. I've been out of high school for ten years now, and my reunion is coming up next month. However, with the advent of Facebook and Myspace, I keep in contact with the people I want to keep in contact with (and the few who are not on either site I see on a monthly basis anyway). With that premise in mind, with social networking sites all the rage, are high school class reunions obsolete? Asked by Snoop - Mon Jul 14 19:48:04 2008 - - 4 Answers - 2 Comments A. I think they are helping to make reunions obsolete. Besides, on these networking sites you can describe yourself any way you want. If you were the fat girl who always wanted to be the pretty, popular girl you can post some photoshopped pics of yourself. You can say that you are a successful lawyer, doctor, banker, businessperson, the list goes on. You can show a picture of yourself with some random hot girl and say that's your wife and put up pictures of your nieces and nephews and say they're your beautiful children. In other words, these sites offer the ability to bluff and raise the stakes of seeing one another in person. So yes, I think they are helping to make reunions obsolete. I also think that people don't tend to come back home… [cont.] Answered by katerbecker - Mon Jul 14 20:32:42 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "social networking" Social Networking in the Afterlife
